Each year, the young musicians of the Louisville Youth Orchestra perform in one of the highlight concerts of the season: the annual The Kentucky Center’s Gheens Great Expectations Concert that includes a side-by-side performance with the Louisville Orchestra.
This year’s concert conducted by LYO Music Director Deanna Tham also features violinist Melissa White on a program with Verdi’s Overture to “La Forza del destino”; two movements of Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy for violin and orchestra; and Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances” from “West Side Story.”
White has received accolades for her work, which includes winning the Sphinx Competition for young black and Latino string players at age 16 and later co-founding the Grammy Award-winning Harlem Quartet. As a member of The Harlem Quartet, White has played in venues ranging from public schools in the Bronx to the White House.
