John Malveaux: Concerts Targeting African Americans Lack Composers of African Descent

Courtney Lewis conducts Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, Friday, March 16, 2012 7:30 PM California African American Museum, Exposition Park, Los Angeles.

John Malveaux of www.MusicUNTOLD.com writes:

Please see link publicizing March 16, 2012 performance of LA Phil at California African American Museum:

I applaud CAAM and LA Phil for this community outreach project and I will attend to support. At the same time, I am INTELLECTUALLY CHALLENGED to understand why this program and other programs targeting the African American community do not include A(one) composer of African descent. Considering classical music is cerebral and referred to as art music and academic music, what is the underlying message when composers of African descent are consistently omitted from performances?”

We must assume there is a reason for this, which should be formally provided to the public.
