Detroit Musicologist Arthur R. La Brew, Honored by NANM, Will Be 82 on January 18, 2012

On the 18th, Arthur R. LaBrew, a resident of Detroit, will be 82. A graduate prize-winning pianist from Oberlin he undertook the study of musicology with the venerable Gustav Reese, and continued his piano studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and in Italy. While in New York, he roomed with composers Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson and Noel DaCosta, with whom he maintained a life-long friendship. He is a prolific self-published author and meticulous scholar whose wide-spread interests have had particular focus on 19th-century America, with definitive monographs on Francis Johnson and Elizabeth Greenfield. He has been honored for distinguished service by the National Association of Negro Musicians and the Azalia Hackley Collection of the Detroit Public Library.
