Albany Records Press Release
Albany Records is proud to announce the release of Legacy: Violin Music of African-American Composers. Repertoire includes Francis Johnson’s Bingham's Cotillion; George Morrison's Five Violin Solos; David Baker's Jazz Suite; Ozie Cargile’s Mixed Feelings; and Chad “Sir Wick” Hughes’ S.L.I.C.E. The music is performed by Tami Lee Hughes, violin and Ellen Bottorff, piano.

Legacy is part of the Recorded Music of the African Diaspora series, a collaboration between Albany Records and the Center for Black Music Research. This disc offers a survey of African-American music for violin that begins with Bingham’s Cotillion (composed in 1820) and ends with S.L.I.C.E. (composed in 2006). Five composers’ contributions to the violin repertoire are featured. Francis Johnson, who was the first African-American to have his music published in the United States during his lifetime; George Morrison, who hailed from the string band tradition; David Baker, one of America’s most respected jazz scholars and composers; and the emerging composers Ozie Cargile and Chad “Sir Wick” Hughes.

Tami Lee Hughes is an acclaimed soloist noted for her passionate and expressive musicianship. She has appeared with many U.S. orchestras, including the National, Monroe, Mississippi, and Pontiac-Oakland Symphony Orchestras. Ms. Hughes has given recitals at universities and concert venues in the United States, Russia, and Austria and has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the Ann Arbor Chamber Fest, the Silver Anniversary Celebration of the New Arts Cultural Society and in a tribute concert to Judith Zaimont which was broadcast on National Public Radio. She is an active teacher and advocate for music outreach and is currently Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Kansas. Ms. Hughes has also taught at Marygrove College, Interlochen, and the Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts. She frequently gives concerts and serves as a guest clinician at schools throughout the country.
