'Wood Notes' Will Join William Grant Still's Symphonies 2 & 3 on Naxos CD

Congratulations to Alan Schnay of Park Forest, Illinois! Alan has won a copy of My Life, My Words: The Autobiography of William Grant Still, American Master Composer. He will also receive a copy of IN ONE LIFETIME by the composer's wife Verna Arvey. The contest ended at Midnight, Wednesday, July 6, 2011. The books were provided by William Grant Still Music, which sells My Life, My Words for $19.95.

The new Naxos CD recorded by the Fort Smith Symphony and John Jeter, Conductor will complete the world's first series of recordings of all 5 Symphonies of William Grant Still. Along with Still's Symphony No. 2 (Song of a New Race) and No. 3 (The Sunday Symphony), the CD will include the Suite Wood Notes.

William Grant Still (1895-1978) is profiled at AfriClassical.com, which features a complete Works Lists by Prof. Dominique-René de Lerma, http://www.CasaMusicaledeLerma.com, whose entry tells us Wood Notes is a Suite for chamber orchestra (1947) with a time of 20:00 minutes. It was premiered by Artur Rodzinski, Conductor, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on April 22, 1948. The work was published by Southern Music in 1959. The movements are: 1. Singing river; 2. Autumn night; 3. Moon dusk; 4. Wippoorwill's shoes.
