Open to singers of all races and ethnicities, this competition focuses solely on vocal compositions
written for the recital or operatic stage by composers of African-American descent.

Place: Bushnell Congregational Church, Detroit, MI
As part of The Detroit Spiritual Festival
Eligibility: Open to High School students ages 14-19

Come participate in preparation for solo and ensemble day!
Students are encouraged to use original scores for the competition.

Schedule:
Contestants MUST be available for ALL scheduled events:
January 27th
10-3 PM Preliminary Competition Auditions
3-4 PM Feedback with Judges
January 29th
4-5 PM Final Competition Round Audition
5-5:30 PM Feedback
7PM Winner’s Concer

Attire:
Boys: Jacket and tie
Girls: Street length dress (not formal)
Application fee $10.00

Prizes:
1st $400.00 2nd $300.00 3rd $200.00 4th $100.00 5th $100.00
Complete and return the application by December 15, 2010 along with a check or money order in the amount of $10.00 payable to Videmus (Memo line: GS competition).

"George Shirley was granted emeritus status upon his retirement from The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance in May, 2007. He continues to teach on a part-time basis at the school as well as privately. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Mr. Shirley has been married to the visual artist Gladys Ishop Shirley for 54 years. They have two children, three granddaughters, and one great-grandson."
