“He is teacher, composer and recording artiste. Celso Machado talks to SUBHADRA DEVAN about his music and upcoming shows
BRAZILIAN multi-instrumentalist and world music composer Celso Machado makes music out of anything and everything. Birdcalls using wind and percussion instruments, his voice to sound like a trumpet, his guitar like an orchestra... The 57-year-old who has his own website (http://www.celsomachado.com) says, in an email interview: It’s musical play.

“Machado, born in Ribeiro Preto, São Paulo State and now residing in Vancouver, Canada, has been performing on stages for 40 years — Brazil, Europe, Canada and the United States, among the many. The second youngest of six brothers, he lost his father early and began performing in street bands when aged seven."

“What is it about baroque that draws you since you were inspired to compose pieces with Baroque influences, hence, Barroco Music?
Baroque is a musical style that moves me deeply. I can listen to it at any time of the day. Sad, miserable or happy, the music always seems in harmony with my emotions. I like to use a little touch of this musical style in my compositions — although it sounds more like Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel’s discovery of Brazilian culture.

“Any advice for aspiring composers and musicians?
It is very important to share joy with your audience and have fun yourself. Don’t get too stiff or serious. It is important to find a good balance, to play what inspires you and your audience.
Never forget your audience.” [Celso Machado (b. 1953) is profiled at AfriClassical.com]
