Inquiry on 'Silk Hat and Walking Cane' of African American Composer Florence B. Price

[Florence B. Price]

AfriClassical.com recently received a request in the form of a Guest Book post, for information on a tune which is featured as an audio sample at the website: “I would love to get a recording and the piano sheet music for 'Silk Hat And Walking Cane.' Do you know if these are available, and if so, where to find them? Any info would be appreciated. Her music is great!”

Florence Beatrice Smith Price (1887-1953) is profiled at AfriClassical.com, which features a complete Works List by Prof. Dominique-René de Lerma of Lawrence University Conservatory. Here is his entry on Dances in the Canebreaks, which includes Silk Hat and Walking Cane:

Dances in the canebreaks, for piano (1953) . New York: Mills Music, 1953; Los Angeles: Affiliated Musicians, 1953 (#AMI 3201). 1. Nimble feet; 2. Tropical moon; 3. Silk hat and walking cane. Duration: 9:14.

The sheet music is available from William Grant Still Music:

Dances in the Canebrakes is found on Black Diamonds: Althea Waites Plays Music by African American Composers; Cambria CD-1097 (1993). A newer recording of the work is found on Woman's Work: Music for Solo Piano; Charlotte Mueller, piano; MSR Classics MS 1160 (2006). Both recordings are available from online retailers.

The William Grant Still orchestration of the "Dances in the Canebrakes" is available on our CD, "The Big Broadcast." We rent and sell the scores and parts also. Judith Anne Still, William Grant Still Music
