“We're pleased to announce the return of Sphinx Journeys, seven new one-hour programs exploring music created by composers of color. The series airs at 5 p.m. Sundays beginning June 13 and is hosted by Aaron Dworkin, founder of The Sphinx Organization, which is internationally known for its efforts to increase diversity in classical music, as well as for its annual competition for young Black and Latino string players.

“Upcoming programs will focus on music by Black women composers; contemporary composers; Black and Latino composers under 40, and the influence of spirituals in classical music, among other topics. Funding for Sphinx Journeys is provided by The Kresge Foundation.” “WRCJ 90.9 FM is a listener supported public radio service licensed to Detroit Public Schools and managed by Detroit Public Television.”

Seven prior episodes are also available on the Sphinx Journeys page at WRCJFM.org. Among the one-hour programs is:
“Episode 102 - The Remarkable Journey of William Grant Still
Among his many achievements, William Grant Still became the first African-American composer to have his work performed by a major American orchestra and the first African-American to have an opera produced by a major company in the United States. Listen and hear his Afro-American Symphony; Suite for Violin and Piano; and Ennanga I, II, III.” [The Founder/President of The Sphinx Organization is violinist Aaron P. Dworkin (b. 1970), who is profiled at AfriClassical.com. William Grant Still (1895-1978) is also profiled at the website, which features a comprehensive Works List by Prof. Dominique-René de Lerma of Lawrence University Conservatory]
